HISTORY

historia

The walls of Pazo Baión enclose the history of Galicia’s most important noble families. Founded in the 15th century by the Sarmiento family, Pazo Baión would host some of the most outstanding lineages, such as the Figueroa, Camba and Soutomaior families.

Its centuries of history also include Galician emigrants such as Don Adolfo Fojo. This rich emigrant, who returned from Argentina, bought the property and carried out the most important alterations in the old “pazo” (ancestral home), resulting in its present-day architectural structure with two Victorian-style towers. He also had a dairy and a winery built.

Don Adolfo Fojo’s descendants sold the property in the seventies, which was when the first technical plantation of Albariño belonging to the “Rías Baixas” Designation of Origin was carried out. This vineyard became a point of reference for the sector’s professionals.

Finally, after changing owner several times, on July 16, 2008, Pazo Baión was acquired by Adega Condes de Albarei, which undertook an important project based on three pillars:

– The production of Alabariño wines under the concept of “vinos de pago” (estate wines);
– The creation of a landmark wine tourism centre;
– And an important social project, in which 5% of the sales are used to fund social programmes.

Moreover, Condes de Albarei carried out architectural and landscape alterations on the estate under the direction of the Galician architect  César Portela, a National Architecture Prize winner, thanks to which this jewel of our artistic and cultural heritage is reliving its golden age.
